New Orleans Gains Momentum for 2031 Super Bowl adn Sports Complex Renovation

New Orleans is poised for a meaningful boost in its sports landscape, with renewed hope for hosting super Bowl LXV in 2031 and substantial plans for upgrading its major sports venues. Recent meetings between key stakeholders – including Saints-pelicans owner Gayle Benson, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and NBA Commissioner adam Silver – have paved the way for these potential developments.

Super Bowl Bid Re-Opened

The NFL has invited New Orleans to submit a bid to host Super Bowl LXV in 2031, reversing a previous exclusion due to an unresolved lease agreement for the Caesars Superdome. This invitation comes after the Saints and the state of Louisiana reached a long-term lease extension in November, securing the Superdome’s availability beyond 2030.

“We had a very positive and productive meeting, and I am thrilled that we will have the prospect to bid on the 2031 Super Bowl,” Benson stated. The NFL confirmed New Orleans will be considered in the selection process, though other cities, including Las vegas and Nashville, are also strong contenders for the 2029 and 2030 games.

Addressing Infrastructure Concerns

During previous Super Bowl evaluations, the NFL raised concerns regarding New orleans’ hotel capacity and airport infrastructure. To address these issues, officials presented plans for significant improvements.

• Hotel Expansion: Plans are underway to increase the city’s hotel room inventory to 45,000 rooms, with 27,000 available downtown, representing a substantial investment of nearly $1 billion.
• Airport Upgrades: Louis Armstrong International Airport is slated for a nearly $1 billion upgrade, including the addition of 15 new gates and improved access roads.
• Venue Renovations: Ongoing renovations to the Caesars Superdome are planned, alongside upgrades to Champions Square and the Smoothie King Center.

Smoothie King Center Renovation Plans

Alongside the Super Bowl bid, discussions focused on a major renovation of the smoothie King Center, home of the New Orleans Pelicans. The project aims to transform the arena and surrounding area into a modern sports and entertainment complex. A 2024 feasibility study highlighted the need for upgrades to the arena’s sound system, video board, and refrigeration systems.

The proposed renovations include increasing seating capacity, adding premium club seating, and modernizing the overall fan experience. The Pelicans’ lease at the Smoothie King Center expires in June 2029, providing a timeline for completing the project.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

New Orleans has a proven track record of successfully hosting major sporting events. Super Bowl LIX, held in the city last year, generated an estimated $1.25 billion in economic output for Louisiana, more than doubling the impact of the 2013 Super Bowl.

Governor Landry emphasized Louisiana’s hospitality and economic growth, stating, “Given a chance, we look forward to rolling out the welcome mat once again.” The NFL owners are expected to vote on the 2031 Super Bowl host city later this year.

While the 2031 bid is a primary focus, officials acknowledge potential scheduling conflicts with Mardi Gras and other events that could limit future Super Bowl opportunities until 2038. though, the ongoing investments in infrastructure and venue upgrades demonstrate a long-term commitment to attracting major events to New Orleans.
