Waterford FC faces Derry City in the 2026 FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 pm, as reported by RTE.ie.
The Blues arrive at the Aviva Stadium following a turbulent campaign that began with 14 winless matches, a start no team in League of Ireland history had previously survived, according to WLRFM. Derry City enters the fixture as favorites despite enduring their own chaotic campaign, BBC Sport NI reported.

Graham Coughlan and Waterford FC survived an unprecedented winless start before reaching the final. “As a sports journalist and a Waterford person, I’ve never seen that day,” WLRFM noted of the city’s long-standing hope for major silverware.
Derry City experienced a contrasting path to the Aviva Stadium, overcoming internal struggles and indifferent league form. Candystripes player Connolly told BBC Sport NI that few Derry people had expected to be travelling to the Aviva earlier in the year.

“Probably midway through the season, I don’t think many Derry people had their hotels booked for the Aviva,” Connolly told BBC Sport NI. “Now we’ve a trip to the Aviva and we’re all going to go there and enjoy every moment of it.”
Derry City carries the weight of traditional expectations into the fixture, though the squad has adopted a relaxed approach. “There’s always pressure when you play for Derry City and the expectations of winning things, and that’s been here for a lifetime,” Connolly told BBC Sport NI.

Waterford approaches the match fueled by the emotional backing of a city and county searching for positivity. WLRFM reported that the team received a send-off from supporters before travelling to Dublin.
