Austria to Introduce AI and Media Literacy as Mandatory School Subjects

Vienna – Starting in teh 2027/28 school year,Austrian students in upper secondary schools (AHS) will be required to take dedicated courses in artificial intelligence (AI) and media literacy. Currently, these topics are integrated across various subjects, but will become distinct subjects with scheduled class time.

The new curriculum will feature two separate courses. “Informatics and Artificial Intelligence” will focus on the fundamentals of AI, digital infrastructure, and data protection. This course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of how AI technologies function and the importance of responsible data handling.

The second new subject, “Media and Democracy,” will explore the complex relationship between media consumption and democratic principles. This course will likely cover topics such as media bias, misinformation, and the role of a free press in a democratic society.

Details regarding the specific allocation of class hours for each subject are still being finalized. However, the move signals a meaningful commitment by the Austrian goverment to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate an increasingly digital world and participate effectively in a democratic society.
