The New Zealand Breakers and head coach Petteri Koponen have mutually agreed to part ways, bringing an end to his two-season tenure with the club. Koponen departs after leading the Breakers to victory in the inaugural NBL Ignite Cup, the league’s first in-season tournament ESPN.

Return to Finland for Family and New Opportunities

The decision comes as Koponen seeks opportunities closer to his family in Finland. His wife and children did not relocate to Auckland when he took the coaching position in 2024 ESPN. Koponen expressed his affection for New Zealand and the Breakers community, stating he fell in love with the country and appreciated the support he received during his time with the club BNZ Breakers.

During his two seasons at the helm, Koponen achieved a win-loss record of 23-39 (37.09%) BNZ Breakers. Despite facing challenges with mid-season roster changes and injuries, he maintained a professional and positive attitude. Koponen’s Coaching and Playing Career

Petteri Koponen, born April 13, 1988, is a Finnish professional basketball coach and former player. Before joining the Breakers, he had a distinguished playing career, including stints with Tapiolan Honka, Virtus Bologna, Khimki, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Pallacanestro Reggiana, and Helsinki Seagulls Wikipedia. He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2007. As a player, Koponen won the EuroCup championship in 2015 and multiple Finnish Player of the Year awards.
