Next City Vanguard Conference to Empower Urban Leaders in Chicago, 2026

Next City’s immersive urban leadership conference, Vanguard, will take place in Chicago from September 15-18, 2026. The conference aims to connect, challenge, and inspire rising urban leaders across a diverse range of sectors, including urban planning, community development, entrepreneurship, government, transportation, sustainability, design, art, and media.

Focus on Equitable Cities

The 2026 Vanguard conference will center on the theme “The America That Never Was: In Pursuit of Housing, Jobs, Community Wealth Building, and Environmental Justice.” Participants will engage in tours, panels, hands-on workshops, and receptions designed to foster a deep understanding of urban challenges and innovative solutions.

Who Should Apply?

Vanguard seeks individuals committed to advancing just and equitable cities. Alumni of the program include startup founders, government officials, nonprofit leaders, philanthropic program officers, and executives. The conference aims to build a network of changemakers dedicated to creating positive impact in cities worldwide.

Application Details and Timeline

Applications for the 2026 Vanguard cohort are now open. The early-bird application period, with a discounted fee of $25, runs from March 2nd to April 7th, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. The standard application fee is $35, and the application period closes on May 14th, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern.

Applicants are required to submit a recent résumé and a high-resolution headshot (400×400 pixels or larger).

Conference Costs and Stipends

Participation in the conference is free for those selected, but attendees are responsible for covering their own travel and accommodation expenses. Limited travel stipends are available for applicants with demonstrated financial necessitate.

Chicago as Host City

Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States with a population of over 2.7 million, has been selected as the host city for the 2026 Vanguard conference. The city is comprised of 50 wards, 77 community areas, and 100 neighborhoods. According to analysis from the Othering and Belonging Institute, Chicago is the fifth most segregated city and the second most segregated metro region in the U.S.

“Bringing Next City to Chicago couldn’t happen at a more perfect time as we chart new ways to define the modern city,” says Anton Seals Jr., lead steward of Grow Greater Englewood, and a Vanguard alum and host committee member.
