A Rare Alignment of Planets Will Create a Stunning ‘Celestial Diamond’ in the Night Sky
For stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere, a rare planetary alignment is set to create a breathtaking spectacle this week. From Wednesday thru Friday, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will appear in a nearly perfect line in the pre-dawn sky, forming what astronomers are calling a “celestial diamond.”
“This is a really beautiful event,” says Dr. Shannon Schmoll, director of the Abrams Planetarium at Michigan State University. “It’s not every day you get five planets lined up like this.”
the alignment is a result of the planets orbiting the sun in roughly the same plane, and appearing close together from our outlook on earth. while planetary alignments happen relatively frequently,getting five planets visible at once is less common.
To catch the display, look towards the eastern horizon about an hour before sunrise. Venus will be the brightest object, followed by Jupiter and Mars.Mercury and Saturn will be fainter, but still visible with the naked eye under clear, dark skies.
“You’ll want to find a spot with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon,” Schmoll advises. “Binoculars can help you spot the fainter planets,but it’s definately visible to the naked eye.”
This particular alignment is especially noteworthy becuase of the order of the planets. They appear in the order they orbit the sun,from closest to furthest.
The next chance to see a similar alignment won’t come until 2040,making this week’s event a must-see for astronomy enthusiasts. Even if you miss the peak, the planets will remain relatively close together in the sky for the next few weeks, offering continued viewing opportunities.
Northwestern University has agreed to a $75 million payout to the Trump governance to settle a discrimination examination into the school and to restore federal funding that had been frozen throughout the inquest, the Justice Department announced on Friday.
“Today’s settlement marks another victory in the Trump Administration’s fight to ensure that American educational institutions protect Jewish students and put merit first,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.
“Institutions that accept federal funds are obligated to follow civil rights law – we are grateful to Northwestern for negotiating this historic deal.”
Northwestern is one of several schools ensnared in President Trump’s campaign against university policies he has decried as “woke.”
Specifically, the Illinois private school was one of 60 colleges the Education Department accused of shirking thier obligations to “protect Jewish students on campus, including uninterrupted access to campus facilities and educational opportunities” amid heated university protests against the war in Gaza.
