With the victory, Frida Karlsson took home her first individual medal in an Olympic context – and in the finest denomination.

– I’ve really been longing to pull on the start slip. I think I’ve never been as in love with skiing as I was today, Frida Karlsson told HBO Max after the victory.

Frida Karlsson set a solid pace from the start during the ladies’ skiathlon.

First, a tight cluster was created with four skaters where Frida was joined by Ebba Andersson, Jonna Sundling and the Norwegian Astri Öyre Slind. Sundling was allowed to let go just before switching to classic style, just after the switch Slind also had to let go of the gold medal.

Frida Karlsson continued to increase the pace and finally Ebba Andersson also had to let go of Karlsson – who crossed the finish line with a historically large margin of victory for Skiathlon at the Olympic Games with a full 51 seconds down to Ebba Andersson.

Behind Ebba Andersson, Heidi Weng climbed nicely through the race and took home third place in the race, a full 1 minute and 26 seconds behind Frida Karlsson.
