Owensboro Health and Optum Partner to Enhance Patient Care and Operations

Owensboro Health and Optum announced a comprehensive operational partnership on January 10, 2023, designed to modernize key administrative functions and enhance patient care across western Kentucky and southern Indiana. According to official announcements from Owensboro Health and Optum, the collaboration shifts management of specific non-clinical operations to Optum, impacting approximately 575 health system employees.

Operational Integration and Workforce Transition

Under the terms of the agreement, approximately 575 Owensboro Health team members working in revenue cycle management and information technology services transition to the Optum workforce beginning in April 2023, according to Owensboro Health and Optum statements. These employees become part of Optum’s broader national network while continuing to support Owensboro Health operations. Russ Ranallo, chief financial officer of Owensboro Health, stated that the partnership allows the regional health system to build on prior clinical innovations, recruit top clinicians, and expand services into underserved areas. Dan Schumacher, chief strategy and growth officer of UnitedHealth Group—the parent company of Optum—noted that the collaboration aims to reinvent traditional health care delivery models and improve system efficiency.

Technology Modernization and Patient Billing Experience

Optum assumes management of targeted operational investments and workflows to streamline administrative tasks. According to the joint announcement, the partnership focuses on specific technological and structural improvements:

  • Simplifying revenue cycle workflows to reduce repetitive administrative tasks for staff and improve patient communication.
  • Delivering a transparent, patient-friendly billing experience with rapid issue resolution.
  • Enhancing digital health care infrastructure across all Owensboro Health care delivery networks.
  • Establishing a virtual Center of Excellence contact center training program in Owensboro to recruit, train, and employ regional entry-level and experienced talent.

Regional Workforce Development and Career Growth

In addition to administrative management, the partnership supports local job creation and workforce development initiatives. According to Owensboro Health and Optum, the collaboration creates new career advancement opportunities for existing staff through expanded access to specialized training tools and technologies. Furthermore, the initiative supports educational programs designed to prepare high school and college students for specialized healthcare roles through targeted internships, mentorship programs, and post-graduate hiring pathways.
