ISLAMABAD, January 6, 2026 – Pakistan has initiated the construction of a 1,100 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container ship for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) at the Karachi Shipyard.This project aims to strengthen the nation’s maritime capabilities and reduce its dependence on foreign shipping, according to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
Strengthening Domestic Shipbuilding
The steel-cutting ceremony, marking the official start of construction, was inaugurated by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. He emphasized the project’s significance as a crucial step towards enhancing Pakistan’s shipbuilding industry [[1]].
Chaudhry stated that the vessel will be built entirely using domestic resources, showcasing the growing technical expertise within Pakistan’s shipbuilding sector.
