Midterm Elections Open Across 50 States as Voters Face Long Lines
If Republicans vote, we will win by a landslide,
Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox, setting the stakes for midterm elections that mark his final test at the ballot box since he cannot run in 2028.
Americans headed to the polls for midterm elections that renew the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate, with long lines forming in states like New York, Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. With the opening of polling places in Alaska and Hawaii, voting is now underway in all 50 states.
The nationwide contests serve as the final electoral test for Donald Trump, who cannot run in 2028 after serving two presidential terms. Although his name does not appear on the ballot, Trump has positioned the midterm elections as a referendum on himself, telling Fox in a separate interview that election results will be better than expected and confirming he will monitor outcomes from the White House.
Gubernatorial Contests Across Four States
Voters in Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Ohio could elect their first female governors. In Minnesota, the democrat Amy Klobuchar appears well-positioned to beat her republican rival Lisa Demuth. In Tennessee, the conservative Marsha Blackburn is in the lead against the democrat Jerri Green.
In Georgia, the liberal Keisha Lance Bottom could become not only the state’s first female governor but the first African American female governor in the United States. In Ohio, the democrat Amy Acton could become the first woman to lead the state if she beats the republican Vivek Ramaswamy.
Voting from Space and High-Turnout Lines
The election extends beyond terrestrial polling places. NASA astronaut Anil Menon voted from the International Space Station, sharing a video on X of his electronic ballot transmission to Harris County, Texas officials alongside two other American crew members.
Voters in Fulton County, Georgia, faced deceptive text messages regarding polling place relocations, prompting county election officials to issue warnings via social media directing citizens to verify locations through the Georgia My Voter webpage. Meanwhile, musician Bruce Springsteen published an Instagram video urging election workers to protect constitutional voting rights and ensure every vote is counted, while also voicing support for the Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
El-Sayed spent election day with his family after casting a mail-in ballot, facing Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race. Election analysts at the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times caution that determining final outcomes in some states could take weeks.
