Remembering PFC John Hayden West: A North Bergen Hero

Today, we honor the memory of Private First Class John Hayden West, a resident of North Bergen, New Jersey, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War on March 7, 1969. His story is one of courage, love and a life cut tragically short.

Early Life and Service

John Hayden West was born on November 29, 1948, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He enlisted in the Army and served in South Vietnam. He is remembered by his wife, Linda, as a high school sweetheart with a zest for life.

A Heroic Sacrifice

PFC West was killed in action while providing cover for the evacuation of wounded soldiers. According to his wife, despite being mortally wounded, he continued to press forward, ultimately sustaining a fatal wound. His bravery and selflessness were recognized as a heroic act.

Remembered with Love

Linda West remembers her husband as a man of character, principles, kindness, loyalty, warmth, and laughter. He was known for his adventurous spirit and deep love for his family. Even after many years, he remains the love of her life. Robert Allen, a fellow soldier from North Bergen, also remembers him.
