Frankfurt’s Troubled Tram Fleet Returns to Service After Extensive Repairs
Frankfurt, Germany – After facing significant setbacks due to software and door malfunctions, the Frankfurt Transport Company (VGF) is set to reintroduce its new Alstom trams into passenger service this summer. Extensive testing has confirmed the functionality of the trams, paving the way for a gradual rollout starting in the coming months.
Initial Problems and Temporary Fixes
The first of 58 Alstom trams was delivered to Frankfurt in December 2022, initially met with enthusiasm for its modern design. Though, the trams soon revealed issues with software, vehicle controls, and door sensors, leading the VGF to take them out of service in 2024. As a temporary solution, older trams from the 1970s, which are not barrier-free, were brought back into operation.
Collaborative Resolution with Alstom
The VGF collaborated with Alstom, requesting a fully functional tram. Alstom subsequently provided a revised model, which underwent nine months of rigorous testing. The testing process included evaluations in the VGF’s central workshop and under various weather conditions throughout the Frankfurt network.
Phased Rollout and Future Expansion
The VGF has confirmed that the tests validated the tram’s functionality, allowing for its integration into passenger service. The delivery plan calls for the introduction of a new vehicle every 14 days, starting this summer. The fleet consists of 58 trams: 24 are 31.5 meters long, and 34 are extended to 40 meters with an 8.50-meter middle section.
Statements from VGF Leadership
“I would like to thank all Frankfurt residents for their great patience and I am sure that the wait was worth it,” said VGF managing director Steffen Geers. Wolfgang Siefert, head of the mobility department, added, “The fact that the first ‘T’ car is being put into passenger service is an incredible relief. It is a prerequisite for numerous projects with which we want to expand the tram network and make it fit for the future.”
