Hoppers’ Scariest Scene Was Originally Even More Intense

Pixar’s Hoppers, released on March 6, 2026, has captivated audiences with its nuanced storytelling and surprisingly unsettling moments. While the film initially presents Mayor Jerry as the antagonist, it’s ultimately revealed that Titus, a prince of the Insect Kingdom, is the true villain. One scene, in particular, stands out for its genuinely frightening imagery: the moment when the animals tear off Mayor Jerry’s face to reveal what lies beneath.

A Scene That Tested Audiences

Director Daniel Chong and producer Nicole Grindle discussed the evolution of this pivotal scene during a recent press day. According to Chong, an earlier version of the scene proved too intense for test audiences, particularly children. “You are right to point that out, and that was the shot – in that moment around there – were the moments when we did audience previews where we started to realize that kids were freaking out at that sequence,” Chong explained.

The Removal of a Painful Scream

The initial cut of the scene included screams of pain from Dave Franco, the voice actor for Titus, as his face was being removed. However, this element was deemed too disturbing. “Originally, when the mask was getting pulled off, we had Dave Franco scream in pain. Like it was painful for him, and I feel the audiences realized like, ‘Oh, that was too much.’ So we just had him talk through it. Like, ‘Oh, what are you doing? What are you doing?’ And that I think solved the note,” Chong said. The change made the scene both sillier and more logical, as Titus wouldn’t actually experience physical pain.

Intentional Unease and a Nod to Horror Classics

Despite toning down the scene, Chong emphasized his intention to create a feeling of unease. He drew inspiration from classic horror films, specifically referencing the notorious Judge Doom scenes from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. “Part of it is I wanted it to be kind of freaky and a little bit kind of eerie. And to me, that’s what makes the movie powerful, is that you feel those feelings,” Chong stated. He added that even small adjustments can significantly impact the emotional resonance of a scene.

Hoppers has already achieved box office success, and the unsettling scene with Titus is likely to leave a lasting impression on viewers. Chong hopes the film’s ability to evoke strong emotions will resonate with audiences for years to come.
