Sony Revives 1990s Transparent Plastic Aesthetic With New PlayStation Accessories
“We wanted to bring back the iconic see-through trend of the late ’90s in a fresh, modern way that complements the PS5’s industrial design,” PlayStation designer Leo Cardoso said in a company blog post. Sony is leaning into retro hardware nostalgia by launching the Prism Collection, a new lineup of transparent DualSense controllers and matching console covers for the PlayStation 5, IGN reported.

The collection introduces three translucent color variants: Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray. According to PlayStation designer Satoshi Aoyagi, the team selected these specific tones to showcase the see-through mould, noting that the vibrant orange subtly takes on a rosy hue where materials overlap, the deep hunter green gains depth through transparency, and the storm gray offers a cool-toned finish.
Pricing and Global Release Schedule
Preorders for the Prism Collection open globally on November 10 at 10:00 AM local time via PlayStation Direct and select retailers, with the full product launch scheduled for February 4. The transparent DualSense controllers carry a recommended retail price of $84.99 USD (€84.99/£74.99/R1,899.99). Meanwhile, the matching PS5 console covers are priced at $74.99 USD (€74.99/£64.99/R1,299.99).

Sony has released over a dozen DualSense color variants in the PS5 generation on top of limited-edition controllers tied to specific game releases like Astro Bot and Death Stranding, alongside hardware collaborations with K-pop star Lisa. The company’s recent hardware push also includes the highly popular 30th Anniversary PlayStation collection.
Production Background and Market Reception
The new transparent casings aim to give buyers a clear view of the internal design and craftsmanship of both the console and controllers. The hardware expansion arrives while Sony faces ongoing scrutiny over business decisions, including reduced disc drive production and multiple studio closures.
Despite those industry controversies, hardware sales remain robust. Sony posted a 22 percent increase in PS5 sales over the preceding month, a surge analysts link to the launch of Insomniac’s Wolverine and heavy anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI.
