The Portuguese Cup semi-finals have delivered compelling action, with Fafe and Sporting CP securing their places in the next stage of the competition. The first leg of the semi-final between Fafe and Sporting CP ended in a 1-1 draw, necessitating a second match to determine who will advance to the final, scheduled for May 24th at the National Stadium in Oeiras.

João Ribeiro Oliveira put Fafe ahead in the 43rd minute, but their advantage was short-lived. The match took a dramatic turn with a red card for Fafe’s goalkeeper, João Gonçalo, in the 55th minute. Sporting CP capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Manuel Pozo leveling the score in the 59th minute. Further drama unfolded as Costinha of Fafe also received a red card due to accumulated yellow cards, leaving both teams with ten players.

In the other semi-final pairing, FC Porto, the record 20-time Portuguese Cup champions, will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between Sporting, the current title holder and two-time national champion, and AVS, currently at the bottom of the Primeira Liga. That match is scheduled to take place on Thursday in Lisbon.

This year’s competition is notable for potentially seeing a team from the secondary level reach the final for the seventh time in the tournament’s history.
