Poway Library’s Lunar New Year Celebration Draws Over 625 Attendees

The Poway Library hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, February 28, 2026, attracting more than 625 attendees. The event marked the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse, which runs from February 17, 2026, to February 6, 2027.

Auspicious Year of the Fire Horse

The Year of the Fire Horse is anticipated to be a period of power, strength, and dramatic transformation. In the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle, the horse symbolizes independence, speed, and intelligence. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on the significance of this year.

Cultural Performances and Activities

The celebration featured a diverse range of cultural performances, including a Lion Dance by Team Hoa Nghiem and traditional Chinese dances performed by the Chinese International Exchange Association. Musicians Amber Chen and Jiehuan Liu performed songs on the Guzheng instrument, including “Spring Flower” and “Lie Yang Kiver.” Xinyu Wang showcased their talent on the Hulusi instrument with a performance of “Zhu Lin Shen Chu.” A special Face Changing dance was performed by Danielle Yu.

Attendees also enjoyed live entertainment, face painting, and received red envelopes courtesy of the Poway Library. A live donkey, provided by Party Pony Express, added a unique touch to the festivities.

Community Connection

Poway resident Clare Zhou, originally from northwestern China, expressed her joy at experiencing the Lunar New Year traditions. “I would like to experience the Lunar New Year with Lion Dances and musical instruments,” Zhou said. “I’d like to connect to my culture from Asia.”

On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the San Diego County Library is hosting Baby Storytime at the Poway branch from 1:00pm to 1:30pm, and Teen Game Day from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
