Puerto Rican Identity Through the Lens

The Marquee Cinema at Union South will host a public screening of the film Todo parecía posible on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. The event, beginning at 5:00 p.m. CT, is part of the Luisa Capetillo Cultural Series.

The film investigates the historical tether between image production and the development of national identity in mid-twentieth-century Puerto Rico. It specifically examines how collective memories are created and how visual media has been used to construct a sense of nationhood.

Expert Perspectives on Nation-Building

Following the screening, a conversation will take place. Dr. Pedro Noel Doreste Rodríguez, a film scholar and producer from Michigan State University, will join Dr. Catherine Marsh-Kennerly of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras.

The pair will analyze the legacies of Puerto Rican film production and its intersections with nation-building. This dialogue aims to unpack the film’s themes.

Public Access and Logistics

The screening and the subsequent reception are free and open to the public. Organizers have scheduled the reception to follow the discussion from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Fifth Quarter Studio, located on the second floor of Union South.

The Marquee Cinema is located at 1308 W. Dayton St. in Madison, Wisconsin. While the event is open to all, attendees are asked to RSVP to attend.

Accommodations for Attendees

The university has stated that it will provide reasonable accommodations for participants. Those requiring disability-related assistance are encouraged to email the event coordinators at frodriguezca@wisc.edu to make a formal request.
