Historic Heat Wave Grips Southwestern US, Breaking Records and Raising Health Concerns

A historic heat wave is scorching the southwestern United States, with temperatures reaching record-breaking levels in California, Nevada, and Arizona. The unusually warm weather, occurring at the tail end of winter, has prompted heat warnings and concerns for public health.

Record Temperatures Across the Region

California is experiencing “extremely rare heat for March,” according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The Los Angeles area is particularly affected, with a high of 93°F expected today, March 19th, and forecasts predicting temperatures will reach 108°F in Palm Springs. Heat alerts are in effect through Sunday, with temperatures 25-35 degrees above normal. Numerous daily heat records were broken on Tuesday across more than a dozen areas in Los Angeles, as reported by the NWS on X.

Northern California is also feeling the heat, though to a lesser extent. San Francisco faces a moderate heat risk. In Nevada, Reno has seen record-setting warmth this week, with peak temperatures expected on Friday. Las Vegas already set a March record on Wednesday, with the NWS Las Vegas stating that “daily and monthly temperature records continue to be rewritten.”

Phoenix, Arizona, is under an extreme heat warning, with temperatures expected to reach 105°F on Thursday. The NWS notes that the average first 105°F day of the year typically occurs on May 22nd. Daily records are expected to be broken through Sunday, potentially by as much as 10 degrees.

National Parks Issue Warnings

The heat wave is impacting national parks, prompting officials to urge visitors to seize precautions. White Sands National Park in New Mexico could reach temperatures in the mid-90s Fahrenheit (around 35°C). Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is under an extreme heat warning, with temperatures potentially reaching 104°F (40°C) in some areas. Park officials are advising hikers to avoid strenuous activity between 10 am and 4 pm. Hiking trails at Lake Mead National Recreation Area have been closed due to the extreme heat, according to the National Park Service.

Cooling Temperatures Expected Next Week

Although the heat wave is expected to persist through the weekend, temperatures are forecast to cool next week. Los Angeles is expected to dip into the low-to-mid 80s Fahrenheit.
