Red Alert: Severe Weather Threatens Northland, New Zealand
A red heavy rain warning is in effect for parts of Northland, New Zealand, as a deep low-pressure system approaches, bringing the potential for significant flooding, strong winds, and hazardous conditions. The warning, the highest level issued by MetService, is in place from 4:00 PM Wednesday, March 25, 2026, through 4:00 AM Friday, March 27, 2026.
Red Heavy Rain Warning Details
The red warning covers areas east of Kaikohe, from Doubtless Bay to Whangārei. MetService forecasts rainfall totals of 270 to 320 millimeters (mm) during the warning period. Rainfall rates are expected to begin at 15 to 25 mm per hour, increasing to 25 to 40 mm per hour, and potentially exceeding that rate from Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning. 1News reports this is the third red warning issued by MetService this year and the twenty-second since the highest alert level was introduced in May 2019.
Multi-Hazard Event
This weather event is considered a “multi-hazard” situation, with the potential for not only heavy rainfall but also strong winds and large waves. The New Zealand Herald notes that conditions are expected to make some roads impassable and potentially isolate communities.
Evacuation Advice and Community Response
Residents in Oakura and Whangaruru have been advised to evacuate if they feel unsafe, particularly those impacted by flooding and landslips during the January weather event. The Whangārei District Council recommends leaving during daylight hours and taking pets, along with a grab bag containing four to five days’ worth of essential supplies. Mōkau Marae is prepared to provide a safe space for those needing to evacuate, with residents like Donna Ruka already taking precautions and moving vehicles to higher ground.
Strong Winds and Travel Disruptions
Strong to gale-force winds are also expected, with gusts potentially reaching 120 km/h in exposed areas. MSN reports that Auckland Transport Agency Waka Kotahi anticipates travel disruptions, particularly on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, where lane closures and speed restrictions may be implemented. Drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists are advised to use alternative routes.
