Smyths Toys Recalls ‘Dig’ Toys Over Asbestos Concerns

Smyths Toys has issued urgent recall notices for a range of “Dig” toys after trace levels of asbestos were detected in the products. The recall affects seven different dig kits sold in Ireland and potentially other markets, prompting concerns for consumer safety, particularly for children.

What Products Are Affected?

The following products are subject to the recall:

  • Dino Dig Sensory Bin
  • Gold Dig It Kit
  • 10 piece Dig It Out Dinosaur Eggs kit
  • Dig It Up Pirates Treasure Set
  • Gem Dig Kit 8 Pack
  • Pocket Play Gold Treasure Chest Dig It kit
  • Gem Dig Kit 12 Gem Pack

Why Were the Toys Recalled?

Testing revealed that the sand-like material within some of the “Dig” toys contained trace levels of asbestos. The Irish Times reports that Smyths Toys warned customers to immediately stop using the products and keep them out of reach of children. Whereas the retailer emphasizes that the overall risk is low, the recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure. The Journal confirms that both Smyths Toys and consumer protection watchdogs have issued the recall notices.

What is Asbestos and Why is it Dangerous?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber that was once widely used in construction and manufacturing due to its heat resistance and strength. However, exposure to asbestos fibers can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Even trace amounts of asbestos pose a potential risk, particularly with prolonged exposure.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected “Dig” toys are advised to:

  • Immediately stop using the product.
  • Keep the product out of reach of children.
  • Contact Smyths Toys customer service for further instructions regarding returns or refunds.

Previous Recalls

This is not the first time asbestos concerns have led to recalls involving Smyths Toys products. The Irish Times notes that last month, the retailer, along with other shops, recalled a range of Stretcherz toys due to similar asbestos findings in the sand-like material inside.

Looking Ahead

The recent recalls highlight the importance of rigorous product testing and quality control, especially for toys intended for children. Consumers should remain vigilant and stay informed about product safety alerts. Smyths Toys has not yet released a statement regarding the source of the asbestos contamination or the steps being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
