A Voice Silenced in Kingston

Roots reggae artist Fantan Mojah, born Owen Moncrieffe, died Tuesday at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, at age 49. His booking agency, Vertex, confirmed the singer succumbed to complications from a heart condition shortly after returning to Jamaica from the United States.

From St. Elizabeth to International Stages

Mojah rose as a formidable force in roots reggae during the late 1990s. His music, defined by Rastafarian themes and social consciousness, resonated globally. His signature anthem, “Rasta Got Soul,” became the defining track for a generation of conscious reggae listeners.

His path to stardom began in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, with a chance encounter. Joe Bogdanovich, founder of DownSound Records, discovered the artist while he was working as a window washer. Their partnership produced major records, including “Hail the King” and “Stronger.”

A Fragile Recovery

The artist’s final years were shadowed by severe cardiac issues. In 2024, he was hospitalized in Martinique with chest pains and breathing difficulties; medical assessments at the time suggested his heart was functioning at approximately 15 percent capacity.

By early 2025, his health appeared to stabilize, permitting a return to touring across Europe. This momentum was short-lived. According to Vertex, his condition declined rapidly following his return to Jamaica from the United States. He was admitted to the University Hospital of the West Indies after his health deteriorated over the course of a week.

Unfulfilled Plans and Lasting Influence

At the time of his passing, the singer was preparing for an international return, including a scheduled performance at the Reggae Jam Festival in Germany, for which he had reportedly received approval for a Schengen visa.

Mojah leaves behind his children and a discography that remains a staple in the roots reggae circuit. His work persists as a blend of traditional rhythms and contemporary conscious lyricism, continuing to circulate within the global reggae community.
