Director Zach Cregger’s upcoming adaptation of Resident Evil is slated for a September 18, 2026 release, bringing a fresh survival-horror vision to the screen.
A Courier, a Hospital, and a Viral Outbreak
Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, crafting a narrative centered on a medical courier who travels to Raccoon City to drop off a package at a remote hospital, only to land in the middle of a major viral outbreak. Austin Abrams, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser star in the project.
Facing the Wrath of Hardcore Loyalists
Speaking to The New York Times, Cregger acknowledged that hardcore loyalists might "crucify" him for altering established Capcom lore. While he insists the film does not break major rules, he noted in an earlier interview with SFX magazine that the project is "not completely obedient" to the original video games.
Surprised by the Intensity of Fan Backlash
In an interview reported by The Playlist, Cregger expressed surprise at the sentiment of fans regarding the absence of Capcom icons like Leon S. Kennedy.
"I think I was naive," Cregger told The Playlist. "I thought fans of these games, like me, would be thrilled that somebody was coming along and turning Resident Evil into a survival horror movie… I appreciate that, and I’m sorry that’s not the story I’m bringing."
Letting the Final Product Speak for Itself
Following a viral social media reaction to an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 where he answered trivia questions about Resident Evil 4, Cregger told The Playlist that he is ready to let the final product speak for itself. "Now, I’m just like, ‘You know what? See the movie,’" he said.
Closing the Door on Future Sequels
Beyond the current project, Cregger told Deadline that he has no intention of directing sequels or tackling other established intellectual properties in the future.
"I have been very clear that I’m not doing that," Cregger told Deadline, emphasizing his desire to write original stories rather than manage data points for existing franchises. "I just want to satisfy me."
