Rēzekne sees first light snowfall of the season

Winter made its initial, fleeting appearance in Rēzekne this Saturday morning. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) recorded light snowfall at its local observation station, marking the first time this season the region has seen flakes fall. The precipitation, however, was not enough to leave any lasting trace on the landscape, as reported by LSM.

Mild temperatures prevent accumulation

Data from Latvian State Roads confirms the light precipitation occurred on the morning of November 7. Despite the shift in weather, the ground remains clear. The mercury hovered at one degree Celsius, keeping temperatures just high enough to prevent the snow from settling.

Shifting timelines for early winter

In 2024, the first flakes were recorded on the evening of November 1 and November 2. The timeline for the first snow has fluctuated significantly in recent years:

  • 2023: The first snow arrived early, appearing on October 8.
  • 2025 (Previous year): The first snow was noted on October 12 in the Balvi municipality, with a permanent snow cover not forming until November 14 and 15.

Cold air mass expected next week

Forecasters at the LVĢMC anticipate a change in the national weather pattern starting next week. A colder air mass is set to move in, likely pushing temperatures below the freezing point at various times. While the Rēzekne snowfall remains a transient event, the shift suggests a transition toward more consistent winter-like temperatures in the coming days.

Early snowfall does not guarantee permanent winter

The early snowfall does not necessarily indicate an early winter. Historical data shows that the first snowfall does not always signal the immediate onset of a permanent winter season.
