The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) is moving to enhance the operational range of its aerobatic display team, the Black Eagles, by integrating air-to-air refueling capabilities into their T-50B Golden Eagle aircraft. According to a report from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the upgrade project aims to allow the team to participate in international air shows more independently, reducing reliance on stopover logistics for long-distance deployments.
Technical Upgrades for the T-50B Fleet
The ROKAF plans to initiate the air-to-air refueling modification starting next year. The core of this project involves installing a refueling probe on the T-50B airframe, the specialized aerobatic variant of the supersonic T-50 advanced jet trainer.
By equipping the aircraft with a probe, the Black Eagles will be able to receive fuel from aerial tankers while in flight. This modification is designed to extend the ferry range of the aircraft, which is currently limited by the T-50B’s internal fuel capacity. According to ROKAF operational data, the ability to refuel mid-air effectively removes the need for multiple intermediate landings when the team travels to overseas venues in Europe or the Americas.
