Romania Weather: Yellow Code Alert – Orange Code Possible as Blizzard & Snow Hit 16 Counties & Bucharest

Romania’s National Meteorological Administration Warns of Potential Blizzard Conditions

Romania’s National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued a Yellow Code weather warning for snow and blizzard conditions in Bucharest and 16 counties, effective until Sunday morning. Director General Elena Mateescu indicated the warning could be upgraded to Orange Code depending on overnight developments.

Current Weather Situation

The Yellow Code, mirroring a previous weather episode, covers the south-eastern part of the country. Current forecasts predict strong wind gusts of 60-70 km/h, with a potential snow accumulation of up to 25cm. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as -3.2 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Potential for Code Orange Upgrade

Mateescu emphasized the possibility of upgrading the Yellow Code to Orange Code overnight, particularly if wind speeds exceed 70-80 km/h or snow accumulation reaches significant levels. Such an upgrade would trigger RO-Alert notifications to affected populations, regardless of the time of day. This is in line with European Union and World Meteorological Organization protocols for disseminating weather alerts.

RO-Alert System and Emergency Procedures

The RO-Alert system is automatically activated when a Red Code is issued, transmitting warnings directly to the Department for Emergency Situations. Mateescu underscored the importance of timely alerts, stating, “If we save a life when we issue such a code and such an alert as a means of prevention for us, it means that we have fulfilled our mission.”

Looking Ahead: Potential for Further Winter Weather

While warmer weather is anticipated in the western half of the country between February 23rd and March 23rd, with thermal deviations of 3.5-4.5 degrees Celsius above average, Mateescu cautioned against ruling out further winter episodes. Historical data indicates that snowstorms can occur in Romania as late as March and even April due to dynamic atmospheric conditions during the transition season.

Elena Mateescu’s Background

Elena Mateescu has been the Director General of Romania’s National Meteorological Administration since 2016 [3]. She is too an Executive Director at Administraţia Naţională de Meteorologie [2] and has a PhD in Agronomy [4]. She is a recognized expert in agrometeorology and has contributed to the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [1].
