‘Project Hail Mary’ Soars to $80.6 Million Opening Weekend in the U.S. And Canada
Ryan Gosling’s latest film, “Project Hail Mary,” has launched to a stellar opening weekend, grossing $80.6 million in the United States and Canada. Globally, the science fiction adventure film has reached nearly $141 million, marking the best debut of the year to date.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is the second-highest opening for a film not part of an established franchise, closely following “Oppenheimer’s” $82.4 million debut in 2023. For Gosling, this opening is his second-best, trailing behind “Barbie’s” $162 million launch. “Project Hail Mary” also represents the best start ever for Amazon MGM Studios.
Pixar’s ‘Jumpers’ Continues to Thrive
In second place, Pixar’s animated film “Jumpers,” directed by Daniel Chong, continues its successful run, adding another $18 million over the weekend. The film has now earned a domestic total of $120 million in just three weeks in theaters.
Bollywood Action Thriller Makes Waves
“Dhurandhar: The Revenge,” an Indian action thriller starring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and R. Madhavan, debuted in third place with $13.5 million. This marks the best-ever opening for a Bollywood production in North America, despite its four-hour runtime and limited distribution.
Mixed Results for Horror Sequel
“Till Death Us Part 2,” a sequel directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, starring Samara Weaving and featuring a new cast including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kathryn Newton, Shawn Hatosy, and Elijah Wood, had a disappointing opening, exceeding just $9 million – falling short of expectations of around $20 million. The Searchlight Pictures title will be released in Italy on April 9th.
Romantic Drama Rounds Out Top Five
“Reminders of Him – The best part of you,” distributed by Universal Pictures and starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, closes out the top five, grossing $8 million in its second weekend for a total of $33 million.
