Samsung Discontinues Galaxy Z TriFold After Just Three Months
Samsung Electronics Co. Is ending sales of its Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone after a brief three-month run, marking a swift conclusion to the ambitious, super-premium device’s availability. The decision, confirmed by a Samsung spokesperson to Bloomberg, comes as the company assesses the viability of its most experimental foldable yet.
A Bold Experiment in Foldable Technology
Launched in South Korea on December 12, 2025, and in the US on January 30, 2026, the Galaxy Z TriFold retailed for $2,899. The device featured a unique tri-fold design, unfolding to reveal a 10-inch, 2160 x 1584 display, aiming to deliver a tablet-like experience in a foldable form factor. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, with 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage, the TriFold showcased Samsung’s technical capabilities in display and hinge technology. When folded, it functioned as a thicker-than-average smartphone measuring 159.2 x 75.0 x 12.9 mm.
Limited Availability and Sales
Samsung initially positioned the Z TriFold as a “super-premium device in limited quantities.” According to CNET, sales were limited to Samsung’s website and seven Experience Stores across the US. While the phone sold out in Korea, availability in other markets remained constrained. Reports indicate that only 3,000 units were sold on each of the initial release days in Korea – December 12th and December 17th – according to Bloomberg, citing the Korean daily newspaper Dong-A Ilbo.
Why the Short Lifespan?
Analysts view the Galaxy Z TriFold as a successful proof of concept, demonstrating Samsung’s innovation in foldable technology. However, the high price point and lack of carrier subsidies limited its appeal to a niche market of early adopters. Bloomberg previously noted that the device was unlikely to replace tablets or laptops. Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal told The Register that the third screen added by the TriFold was “never required,” and that users generally desire less screen time, not more.
Rising component costs, including DRAM, NAND flash, and application processors, also contributed to reduced profit margins, as reported by Dong-A Ilbo.
What’s Next for Samsung’s Foldable Lineup?
Samsung is expected to continue its foldable phone development with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, anticipated to launch around July 2026, consistent with past release cycles. Rumors also suggest the potential for a latest foldable line featuring a wider, book-like folding design. Despite ending the TriFold, Samsung remains committed to exploring innovative form factors in the foldable space.

As of March 18, 2026, remaining Galaxy Z TriFold units are only expected to be available at Samsung Experience Stores. Locations with reported stock include Frisco and Queens, New York, as well as stores in Los Cerritos Center and Americana at Brand in Glendale, California; Bloomington, Minnesota; and Garden City and Elmhurst, New York, and Houston and Frisco, Texas.
