12-Year-Old Killed in San Antonio Street Racing Crash, Driver Dies Days Later

SAN ANTONIO – A 12-year-old boy killed in a suspected street racing crash on Tuesday has been identified as Jonathan Rivera, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. The driver of the vehicle suspected of racing died Thursday morning, officials confirmed.

The crash occurred just after 6:30 p.m. On Culebra Road near North Elmendorf Street on the Northwest Side, News4SanAntonio reports.

Details of the Crash

Witnesses told police two vehicles – a sedan and a black pickup truck – were racing when the sedan, driven by a 20-year-old man, lost control, spun into oncoming traffic, and collided with another vehicle. Rivera was a passenger in the sedan and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the sedan was transported to a hospital and died Thursday morning. A 66-year-old woman driving the other vehicle was also hospitalized; her condition remains unknown.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner determined Rivera died from blunt force injuries sustained in the wreck.

Calls for Increased Safety Measures

District One Councilwoman Sukh Kaur, who chairs the city’s public safety committee, emphasized the need for increased safety measures. “We need to do more on educational awareness about the dangers of street racing,” Kaur stated. She is advocating for measures to reduce vehicle speeds in problematic areas, noting that speeding is a significant issue beyond just street racing.

“It was very, very heartbreaking,” said a witness who was nearby when the crash occurred, according to KSAT. The witness described hearing the impact and attempting to help those trapped in the vehicles.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
