Electronic Arts Cancels Next Mass Effect Project After Closing BioWare Studio
Electronic Arts canceled the upcoming Mass Effect project following its decision to close BioWare, the Canadian studio that operated for 30 years and established the Western RPG genre through franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Jade Empire, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. The closure on October 21 terminated the developer’s trajectory and halted production on the next chapter of the sci-fi series.
Fan Mobilization and #SaveMassEffect Campaign
Players responded to the cancellation by launching online protests on social media and Reddit under the hashtag #SaveMassEffect. The community’s objective centers on forcing Electronic Arts to reverse its decision or sell the intellectual property to an outside studio. One Reddit user urged fellow players to take action before the discussion fades and the franchise joins canceled series that never return. Another user initiated an ‘EA Boycott!’ movement, calling for a total refusal to purchase Electronic Arts products, including games from Respawn Entertainment, DICE, Motive Studios, Criterion Games, Maxis, Full Circle, Cliffhanger Games, and EA Sports lines.
A public petition on Change.org surpassed 76,500 signatures, demanding that the publisher transfer the franchise development to an external team. The community backlash intensified after the leak of a trailer for the canceled project, which featured the title Mass Effect Universe and showed returning characters alongside advanced exploration mechanics.
Industry Figures React as Franchise Moves to Television
Jennifer Hale, the voice actress for FemShep, publicly reacted to the trailer release by joining calls for the development team’s work to reach players. Former executive producer Mark Darrah suggested that Electronic Arts might prove more inclined to sell Mass Effect and Dragon Age following the studio closure. However, industry analysts warn that major publishers treat such prestige franchises as strategic assets, making a concession to public protest unlikely.
While the games division faces an indefinite halt, the franchise will continue through a television adaptation currently in development at Prime Video.
