SBB Invests 3.8 Million Swiss Francs in Digital Language Training

Language barriers between railway staff and passengers cause recurring frustration on Swiss trains, prompting SBB to launch a comprehensive digital training initiative. SBB has awarded a 3.8 million Swiss franc contract to a Munich-based provider to deliver digital language learning programs for its workforce. The continuing education program is scheduled to run from 2027 through 2031, modernizing and expanding language support across the network.

The investment addresses communication friction that arises when employees and customers speak different national languages. SBB spokesperson Carmen Hefti stated that language skills form an important part of everyday work, facilitating communication with passengers and improving collaboration with other employees and external organizations. Multilingualism remains in high demand both for frontline customer service and internal operations.

Rollout Across Subsidiaries and Safety-Critical Roles

The new language courses are designed to serve a variety of professional groups within the rail network. In addition to general language instruction, the curriculum includes targeted training for employees who interact directly with customers. SBB will also deploy the digital courses for positions where clear communication is particularly important for safety reasons.

The educational mandate extends beyond the main railway company to include key subsidiaries. Employees working at Elvetino and SBB Cargo will also gain access to the digital learning modules. The rollout follows a competitive bidding process required by current procurement regulations, which resulted in the contract being awarded to the previous provider from Germany.

Background on Network Communication Incidents

The modernization of language training arrives as rail operators face ongoing scrutiny regarding operational communication. An incident reported by Blick in August 2025 near Neuchâtel demonstrated that communication failures in rail traffic can carry far-reaching consequences. That event involved a near-collision between a regional train and a freight train, triggered by a misunderstanding between German-speaking train operators and French-speaking staff at the operations center that routed the regional train to the wrong track.

SBB has clarified that the new language program is part of long-standing personnel development efforts rather than a direct response to the Neuchâtel incident. Spokeswoman Hefti noted that the upcoming mandate simply modernizes and expands existing language support structures.
