The indifference of left-leaning mayors and city councils to homeless encampments sprouting up in parks, sidewalks, and subways represents a great tragedy of liberal rule in our inner cities.
Effective leaders demonstrate empathy for the homeless by providing shelter and services, while also preventing them from erecting tents on sidewalks or in parks during freezing temperatures as they struggle with drug habits.
Many believed New York City was ungovernable in the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. Then, pragmatic leadership emerged with Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, who empowered the police to remove criminals from the streets and assist the homeless by offering shelter, rather than allowing them to occupy public spaces.
