Shōgun Season Two: New Cast Additions and Production Updates

As production on season two of Shōgun gains momentum, the critically acclaimed drama is expanding its ensemble cast with several new faces. The series, which captivated audiences with its stunning visuals and compelling narrative, is set to return with a continuation of the story more than a decade after the events of the first season.

Newcomers Join the Shōgun Family

Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi, and Takashi Yamaguchi have joined the cast for season two. While specific character details remain under wraps, the actors will portray Gabriel (Kukihara), Rin (Satô), Jōshin (Nishida), Saitō (Koichi), and Kanō (Yamaguchi). Filming is currently underway in Vancouver, with a projected premiere sometime in 2027.

Returning Stars

Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will reprise their leading roles in the second season. They will be joined by returning cast members Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri.

Recent Casting Announcements

FX officially renewed Shōgun in April 2025 and has since announced additional cast members, including Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, Jun Kunimura, and Ren Meguro.

Familiar Faces: Actor Backgrounds

Among the new additions, Takashi Yamaguchi may be most recognizable to American audiences for his roles in Letters From Iwo Jima, Apple TV’s Pachinko, and appearances on CBS’ Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Fox’s Accused. Ryô Satô has appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Silence, and Mantaro Koichi boasts a substantial film and television career in Japan. Seishiro Nishida received the best producer award at the 16th Japan Film Festival Los Angeles for his 2021 film Ōtsunahiki no Koi/Love and the Grand Tug-of-War. This marks Risei Kukihara’s first major role.

Production Details

Shōgun is produced by FX Productions. Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the creators of the television adaptation based on James Clavell’s novel, serve as executive producers alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Risei Kukihara is represented by 42 and CAA.
