The New Zealand Silver Ferns entered the fourth Test against the Australia Diamonds in Melbourne aiming for a historic clean sweep of the Constellation Cup. Only two clean sweeps had occurred in the history of the Constellation Cup prior to this series, with Australia taking all matches in both 2014 and 2017. The Silver Ferns‘ recent surge under coach Dame Noeline Taurua also positioned them to potentially claim the top spot in the World Netball rankings when the global governing body updates its list on December 1st.
Lineup changes marked the build-up to the Melbourne finale. The Australian Diamonds kept their match-day squad unchanged while managing injuries to Matilda Garrett (concussion) and Jamie-Lee Price (calf). For New Zealand, Peta Toeava replaced Kimiora Poi in the match-day 12.
Defensive Intensity and Discipline on the Court
Physical play characterized the opening exchanges in Melbourne, following a third Test in Sydney where the Australian side conceded 51 penalties to New Zealand’s 44. Australian defender Amy Parmenter drew an early warning from the umpire for repeated infringements just five minutes into the match.
The defensive combinations for both sides traded turnovers throughout the first half. New Zealand leaned on the defensive partnership of captain Karin Burger and Kelly Jackson to disrupt the shooting circle. Burger was pictured in a moon boot for an issue with her left foot earlier in the week.
Midcourt battles remained fierce as New Zealand utilized Maddy Gordon and Kate Heffernan. During the closing moments of the Sydney fixture, Maddy Gordon was awarded possession in a contest and the 11,000-strong crowd in Sydney responded with boos, to which Gordon responded by mimicking a chattering mouth with her hand.
World Cup Implications and Squad Depth
Success in the Constellation Cup campaign shifted expectations for the Silver Ferns ahead of the Netball World Cup scheduled in Australia next year. New Zealand’s come-from-behind victory in Sydney demonstrated renewed depth, anchored by goal shoot Grace Nweke, who shot 41 from 45 attempts in the third Test.
Domestically, New Zealand netballers awaited firm scheduling for a new privatized competition backed by Anna Mowbray and Ali Williams, slated to launch in 2027. Dame Noeline Taurua has not lost a game as Silver Ferns coach in 2026, guiding New Zealand to Commonwealth Games gold and the Constellation Cup.
