Singapore Launches SpexSG to Elevate High-Performance Sport
Singapore is consolidating its high-performance sports infrastructure under a new entity, Sports Excellence Singapore (SpexSG), effective April 1, 2026. This move aims to provide more integrated and seamless support for national athletes, strengthening the nation’s sporting ecosystem.
Consolidation of Key Institutions
SpexSG will consolidate the High Performance Sport Institute (HPSI), Singapore Sports School (SSP), and the Unleash the Roar! (UTR) national football project . Even as each organization will maintain its branding, the consolidation is designed to optimize resources and enhance the athlete experience.
Key Objectives of SpexSG
The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) outlined three key focus areas for SpexSG:
- Enhanced Athlete-Centric Support: Providing comprehensive support to athletes throughout their sporting careers, including during key life transitions.
- Strengthening Partnerships with National Sports Associations (NSAs): Deepening collaboration with NSAs to bolster the broader sporting landscape.
- Deepening Specialist Capabilities: Improving expertise in areas like sports science and sports medicine.
Operational Structure and Benefits
SpexSG will operate as a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG), offering greater operational flexibility and agility. This structure will also facilitate the recruitment of top talent . Benefits for athletes include a more integrated youth-to-senior support framework and targeted scientific and medical support aligned with their performance trajectory.
Investment in Sports Facilities
Alongside the launch of SpexSG, the government is investing in sports facilities, with plans to build 50 multipurpose courts for badminton and pickleball over the next five years . Eight dual-use courts are already operational at The Kallang, and another eight pickleball courts will open at Little India bus terminal in the coming months. A new S$10 million grant has also been announced to encourage the formation of multi-school co-curricular activity teams.
Supporting Elite Athletes Through Scholarships
The government continues to support elite Singaporean athletes through the spexScholarship, providing financial aid, training opportunities, and career assistance to support them excel on the global stage. Undergraduate student-athletes can also apply for scholarships with Central Provident Fund (CPF) top-ups .
