Sixers Partner With Kalshi in First NBA Team Deal

The Philadelphia 76ers are becoming the first NBA franchise to partner with the prediction market Kalshi, following a broader league-wide agreement struck earlier in the week. Founded in 2021, Kalshi operates as a prediction market rather than a traditional sportsbook, allowing users to trade on “Yes” or “No” outcomes for real-world events like elections, reality television, and sports games by trading against other users rather than “the house.”

Integration and Fan Engagement Plans

As part of the multi-faceted launch in Philadelphia, Kalshi will fund postgame SEPTA transit rides for fans attending Friday’s home game against the New York Knicks. The partnership also introduces fan-engagement initiatives, including a local artist poster series and digital rewards distributed through the Sixers mobile app for users to claim free merchandise and concessions.

We found a lot of alignment on fan-engaging promotions, Sixers Chief Revenue Officer Owen Morin said.

Addressing potential fan unease regarding the partnership, Morin pointed back to the league’s primary directives on protecting competition. It really stressed, I think, all of our collective goals, not only the Sixers, the NBA, Kalshi’s, and others, of really protecting the integrity of the game, Morin said. The NBA has made that obviously a key priority. That’s obviously a focus of ours as well.

League-Wide Rules and Recent Gambling Scrutiny

The NBA’s overarching agreement grants major prediction markets the right to display official league logos, utilize league data, and advertise during broadcasts, while giving the league approval power over listed markets. These commercial partnerships arrive amid heightened league scrutiny surrounding sports betting and financial prediction platforms. Former NBA player Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban from the league for involvement in a gambling scheme, and Malik Beasley recently pleaded guilty in a separate case. Consequently, the league instructed sportsbooks to restrict wagers on opening tips, specific missed shots, and under bets for players anticipated to play fewer than 12 minutes.

Similar platforms have drawn outside scrutiny. LeBron James faced questions earlier this year for partnering with Polymarket, another major prediction market. Meanwhile, the NFL strictly prohibits players from investing in or endorsing prediction market companies or gambling entities. Front Office Sports reported earlier this week that Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was compelled by the NFL to divest his equity stake in Polymarket.
