Winter Weather Alert: Slippery Roads and Code Yellow Issued for several Dutch Provinces

Motorists in the Netherlands are advised to exercise extreme caution due to anticipated slippery road conditions resulting from snowfall expected this evening and overnight. Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch public works agency, has issued a warning and is actively implementing gritting measures, though they acknowledge the potential for hazardous conditions remains.

Despite continuous salting efforts, the reduced traffic volume on highways diminishes the effectiveness of salt distribution, increasing the risk of ice formation. According to Rijkswaterstaat, the salt is not adequately worked into the road surface with less traffic.

Currently, a Code Yellow weather warning is in effect for the provinces of North and South Holland, Utrecht, Overijssel, Gelderland, and Flevoland. the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) forecasts the potential for several centimeters of snow accumulation, particularly in the central and eastern regions of the country. https://www.knmi.nl/

Travelers are strongly encouraged to check current road conditions and weather forecasts before embarking on journeys. Adjusting driving behavior to account for slippery surfaces is crucial for ensuring safety.
