The Slovak Theatre in Uherské Hradiště is staging a theatrical adaptation of Lars von Trier’s film Dogville, scheduling its premiere for October 31. The production brings the director’s grim moral parable to the stage under the direction of Tereza Říhová, featuring a scale and physical demands that lead actress Klára Vojtková described as the most challenging of her career.

The Arrival in Dogville and the Descent into Cruelty

The story follows a mysterious young woman named Grace who flees into the fictional American town of Dogville during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Guided by a local intellectual named Tom, the townspeople grant her asylum. Over time, initial hospitality and compassion curdle into exploitation, superiority, and outright lawlessness. The production explores how easily a closed community turns against vulnerability.

Director Tereza Říhová explained that the question of where human dignity draws its line remains urgent in contemporary society. Dramaturg Iva Šulajová added that the play functions as a behavioral laboratory, examining how violence grows quietly out of everyday actions committed in the name of good.

Cast Changes and Staging Differences from the 2003 Film

Klára Vojtková takes on the central role of Grace, a part played by Nicole Kidman in the 2003 film. Vojtková admitted that she initially felt horrified upon watching the film in the summer and nearly cast her own daughter in a children’s role before withdrawing her from rehearsals due to the nature of the thriller. Pavel Šupina plays Tom, the local doctor’s son who fancies himself a philosopher.

On the technical side, director Tereza Říhová noted that the stage production differs notably from the film through distinct set design and by dividing the narrator’s role among all characters rather than using a single voiceover. Christian Lollike adapted the original screenplay, with Michaela Weberová handling the translation. Jana Hauskrechtová and Josef Čihák take care of the stage design, Matěj Štrunc composed the music, and Kuba Jíra provides the video projection.

Ticket Availability and Performance Schedule

Following the October 31 premiere, upcoming performances are scheduled for November 2 and November 3, with tickets available on the Slovácké divadlo website and box office. The production is restricted to audiences aged 15 and older.

Cast and Creative Team

Alongside Klára Vojtková and Pavel Šupina, the cast features David Vaculík, Daniel Gajdoš, Klára Ondrůšková, Petra Staňková, Tereza Novotná, Pavlína and Jiří Hejcman, and new artistic ensemble member Michaela Skalová among others.
