The failure of the film Snow White proved costly for Disney. According to the magazine Forbesthe Hollywood giant would have suffered a loss of around 170 million US dollars in this commercial disaster.
Released almost a year ago, the most recent adaptation of the Disney classic only collected $205 million at the worldwide box office, a sum well below its initial budget, estimated at more than $270 million.
In an article published this week, Forbes confirms that the Hollywood studio lost tens of millions of dollars with this project. Based on the company’s financial documents, the economic magazine puts forward a loss estimated at $168.7 million. These documents also reveal that the film went over its production budget, with total costs reaching 336.6 million.
The British government, however, reimbursed $64.9 million in filming-related expenses, bringing the net costs down to $271.6 million. By subtracting the studio’s share of box office revenues (estimated at $102.9 million), we obtain the estimated amount.
Forbes specifies, however, that this calculation does not take into account marketing expenses, nor the income generated by the exploitation of the film on video on demand.
In addition to having been mistreated by critics at the time of its theatrical release last March, Snow White received six nominations at the next edition of the Razzie Awards, a satirical ceremony which rewards the worst in American cinema each year.
