Sofia Avoids Garbage Crisis with Contract Extensions
SofiaS Metropolitan Municipality has secured continued waste collection services in nine districts by extending contracts with existing providers. This prevents immediate disruptions as the city transitions too new long-term agreements. Mayor vasil Terziev announced the news on his Facebook profile, stating the extensions were secured under reasonable terms and protect public interests.
The extensions cover Zone 1 (Sredets, Lozenets, Studentski), Zone 5 (Vrabnitsa, Novi Iskar, Bankya), and Zone 7 (Vazrazhdane, Oborishte, Triaditsa). These contracts were extended while the city conducts a search for new, long-term partners.
For Zones 1 and 7, the extended contract price is BGN 209 per ton. This represents a 19% increase from 2020 prices, but remains significantly lower than offers received from other bidders – BGN 379/ton and BGN 349/ton respectively. Zone 5 will maintain its current price of BGN 175/ton, with a long-term contract expected to be finalized in January.
This action addresses concerns about a potential “garbage crisis” and ensures consistent waste management for a important portion of the city. The municipality aims to establish stable, cost-effective, and long-lasting waste collection solutions for all of sofia.
