some things cannot be explained, because you only realize them at the moment they happen. at the age of eighty-two, my dad died, and in addition to wonderful memories, I was also left with his old Volkswagen Golf station wagon. He had it at such an advanced age mainly so that he could carry home wood for heating. That’s why it didn’t have rear seats.
I told myself that I would not throw him out. I decided to put a mattress in place of those seats, changed the mudguards and oil and said to myself: Now that car could go beyond the Arctic Circle.
Was that enough for you to go there?
I needed a fortnight more for that. I just had a free weekend and I thought I’d just go beyond the Arctic Circle. And I set off in the direction of Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
Was it adventurous?
Yes, and it already started in Germany. There was a huge traffic jam in Dresden towards Magdeburg, and I thought I would drive a hundred kilometers and take it via Berlin. But the highway was closed in front of him and I didn’t move for about three hours.
Because of that, I didn’t arrive in Denmark until three in the morning. I slept in the parking lot on that mattress in the back of the car and continued to Sweden the next day. I arrived in Malmö and had the feeling that it was almost won.
It’s still a long way from Malmö, isn’t it?
It’s still two thousand kilometers.To fit the mattress in the car, I had the front seat close to the steering wheel, the car had manual controls, and I was facing a huge crisis on the third day. I was totally exhausted and thought I’d leave the car there, somehow get to the airport and fly home.
Fortunately, I treated myself to a small hotel for my sleep, and it was so pleasant and invigorating that I realized in the morning that I wanted to continue. There was gorgeous nature around, I filmed it on my mobile phone and it was wonderful. Moreover, the weather was quite nice, it was above zero.
however, when I reached the settlement of Abisko, I found that I was running out of gas.
Are there enough gas stations?
It isn’t. It was sixty kilometers to the nearest one in the city of Kiruna, but I only had enough fuel for thirty kilometers. There was a diesel store in Abisko, but I only had a card, and I couldn’t pay with it there. And so I we
