Sony Group Corp. reported a 44% increase in profit for the July-September quarter, reaching 449.6 billion yen ($2.8 billion) compared to nearly 311 billion yen during the same period last year. The electronics and entertainment giant saw its quarterly sales rise 10% to 3.4 trillion yen.
Sony Profits Surge on Movie Success and Console Demand
The company’s bottom line received a significant boost from the box office performance of its movie, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Alongside its film success, Sony maintained strong demand for its PlayStation game consoles. While the PlayStation 5, which first launched in 2020, saw sales dip to 2.6 million units this quarter compared to 4 million a year ago, the hardware remains a core pillar of the company’s financial output.
By business segment, Sony noted that operating profit and sales increased across its games, music, and pictures operations. Sony’s growth happened even as the tech industry faced supply chain problems, including a shortage of computer chips caused by the AI surge.

Weak Yen Helps Raise Annual Profit Forecast
Sony’s financial results benefited from the weakness of the Japanese yen, which increased the value of its overseas earnings when converted back to local currency. The U.S. dollar has traded at approximately 158 Japanese yen recently, rising from about 154 yen a year ago.
Reflecting this momentum, the company raised its profit forecast for the full fiscal year ending in March 2027 to 1.3 trillion yen, up from a previous projection of 1.2 trillion yen. This target represents an improvement over the 1 trillion yen net profit recorded in the previous fiscal year. Sony shares closed 7% higher in Tokyo trading shortly before its financial results were announced.
