Spice Mall Hosts "Bildes" Festival Exhibition of Painted Cans

The music and art festival “Bildes” has launched its latest exhibition, titled “Kannojam!”, at the Spice shopping center in Riga, nra.lv reported. The showcase features 38 works crafted by musicians, artists, and other creative personalities during the festival’s summer camp at Jumurda Manor.

Upcycled Containers on Display at Spice Shopping Center

Exhibits in the second-floor gallery space consist of artistic modifications made to petrol and milk cans. Participants in the creative project include well-known cultural figures such as Svens Linga, Arnis Miltiņš, Guntars Mucenieks, Dace Pūce, Ikars Ruņģis, Jānis Vanadziņš, Inese Mailīte, Ivars Mailītis, and Velga Vītola. The altered metal containers juxtapose everyday industrial objects with fine art techniques.

Metal artist and Latvian Academy of Art associate professor Arvīds Endziņš explained the conceptual contrast driving the exhibition. It’s common for artists to work on canvas, paper, the wall of a building… But all that has already happened. This time we’re painting, Endziņš said, pointing out how the iconic shape of a fuel canister dictates new rules and stories compared to traditional canvases.
