Runner Beats 10K Personal Record Using Google Gemini, Frandroid Says

Running an AI-generated training plan using Google Gemini helped a runner shave nearly four minutes off a 10-kilometer personal best, Frandroid reported.

How did a runner prep for the Odyssea Paris 10K using Google Gemini?

The 28-week training block began shortly after the Paris half-marathon in March 2026. Setting sights on the Odyssea Paris 10 km held on October 4, 2026, the runner aimed to break a previous personal record of 46 minutes and 52 seconds set in November 2025. Frandroid reported that the goal was to push under 45 minutes, with an outside ambition of breaking 43 minutes.

Google Gemini was chosen as the primary coaching tool, accessed via a professional Google Workspace account. To prevent the AI from suffering memory loss over the long training cycle, instructions were organized inside a customized “Gem” skill set. An initial demi-Cooper test—running the maximum distance possible in six minutes—provided the baseline VMA data fed into the initial prompt.

Why did the AI training plan run into early roadblocks?

Early weeks exposed significant flaws in the AI-generated schedule. Gemini initially scheduled a 12-week plan instead of the required 28 weeks and prescribed dangerously steep intensity jumps. Frandroid reported that the model tried to escalate a Tuesday workout from 6 x 600-meter intervals at 3 minutes and 50 seconds per kilometer to 2 x (8 x 300 meters) at 3 minutes and 35 seconds per kilometer just one week later. That jump pushed the required pace from 15.65 km/h to 16.74 km/h overnight, forcing the runner to completely overhaul the system instructions with strict rules on progressive overload.

Unlike dedicated running applications that sync directly with sports watches, Gemini lacked direct hardware integration. Every daily workout had to be entered manually into Garmin Connect.

How did extreme heat and travel change the Gemini running schedule?

Flexibility emerged as one of the experiment’s major advantages.

Did the AI-coached runner break the 10-kilometer record?

Tapering over the final ten days brought reduced volume and intensity just ahead of the October 4 race day. Standing at the starting line of the Odyssea Paris 10 km, the runner maintained the target pace of 4 minutes and 17 seconds per kilometer.

Frandroid reported that the runner crossed the finish line with a final time of 43 minutes and 9 seconds. Despite four brief walking breaks totaling seconds, the result smashed the previous personal best of 46 minutes and 52 seconds, trimming 3 minutes and 43 seconds off the total time.

Why Gemini failed as a running coach?

How many weeks long was the final training program?

The training program spanned 28 weeks, running from shortly after the March 2026 Paris half-marathon up until the Odyssea Paris race on October 4, 2026.
