Camp GUCI Theater Director Position
A specific opportunity exists at Camp GUCI, a well-established camp in the Midwest that attracts campers nationwide. As part of the URJ network of camps, Camp GUCI provides a supportive and impactful community for both campers and staff. Mainstages has a long-standing partnership with Camp GUCI, providing a Theater Director to oversee two productions throughout the summer, along with other supervisory responsibilities such as planning specialty days and camp-wide creative events.
Responsibilities of the Theater Director
- Rotating Activity Periods: Participate in 40-minute activity periods six days a week, with reduced programming on Fridays due to Shabbat.
- Direct Theater Production Periods: Direct theater productions for 2 hours each afternoon, six days a week, with additional rehearsals scheduled as productions approach.
- Curriculum Development: Facilitate a theme-based curriculum that celebrates diversity.
- General Supervision: Provide general supervision as needed, though the Theater Director is not assigned to a specific bunk.
- Administrative Duties: Attend and complete online trainings with Mainstages.
- Engagement: Infuse excitement into each lesson with age-appropriate games and activities from the Mainstages curriculum.
- Evening Duties: Participate in overnight duty one night per week (11pm-1am), including a campsite walk-through and evening close-down procedures. Be prepared to lead possible evening activities.
Position Details
- Time Commitment: Approximately 53 hours per week.
- Breakfast Attendance: All Specialists are required to attend breakfast at 7:45am.
- Age Range: Activity periods cater to ages 4-15, while production periods focus on ages 8-15.
- Housing: In-bunk housing with one roommate of the same sex.
- Travel Assistance: Travel assistance is provided up to $500.
Compensation
Mainstages acts as a staffing agency and does not determine pay. Teaching artists are considered independent contractors. Pay rates for sessions range from $100-$200 depending on session length.
How to Apply
Interested candidates with experience directing youth theater productions or teaching youth theater classes in afterschool or summer camp settings are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates possess strong leadership skills, high energy, comfort managing large groups, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Applicants should be able to self-report to Astoria, Queens for vehicle and supplies pickup, and access to a vehicle is strongly encouraged.
