Swiss Voters Overwhelmingly Reject Wealth Tax
Preliminary results indicate that approximately 82 percent of swiss voters rejected a proposal to implement a 50 percent inheritance tax on estates exceeding 50 million Swiss francs (roughly 590 million Norwegian kroner). The tax would have applied to assets passed down to heirs upon the death of the estate holder.
Prior to the referendum, several prominent Swiss business leaders publicly warned thay would consider relocating their businesses and personal wealth outside of Switzerland if the tax were approved. Concerns centered around the potential impact on the Swiss economy and its reputation as a stable financial center.
The proposed tax was championed by the Social democratic Party of Switzerland, who argued that the revenue generated could be allocated to fund critical climate change mitigation initiatives. Despite this, the proposal faced strong opposition from center-right and right-wing parties, as well as business groups.
