Jason Taumalolo Likely Concludes World Cup Career After Tonga Exit
Jason Taumalolo likely played the final game of his rugby league World Cup career on Saturday night as Tonga exited the tournament following a 34-10 loss to New Zealand. The defeat sent the Kiwis through to the tournament final and closed another chapter for the North Queensland Cowboys enforcer, who will turn 37 before the next World Cup arrives.
Playing 48 minutes in Saturday night’s semi-final, the 33-year-old ran for 116 metres and completed 31 tackles in a gutsy performance. Born in Auckland, Taumalolo initially played 10 Tests for New Zealand before switching his international allegiance to Tonga in 2017. He went on to represent the island nation 24 times, serving as a catalyst for other players to represent their Tongan and Samoan heritages.
Taumalolo Sparked International Rugby League Allegiance Shifts
Taumalolo is widely credited as the architect of Tonga and Samoa’s rise in international rugby league. By choosing to represent Tonga at the height of his career in 2017, he established a precedent that encouraged other players to switch from New Zealand and Australia to play for their heritage nations. Following Saturday’s loss, Taumalolo reflected on the core group of players making their mark in the international scene and getting better from here. I think with the core group of players that we have right now they can really make their mark in the international scene,
Taumalolo said. They’re only going to get better too, so if they got a lot of international games they can connect and this campaign, for most of them, was probably the first time they’ve played alongside each other.
He added that the squad featured players who could have easily represented New Zealand or Australia instead.

Supporters and Pundits Praised His International Impact
Social media filled with tributes from pundits and supporters acknowledging his impact on the international game. One commentator noted that Taumalolo changed international rugby league and inspired a new generation of players to represent Tonga.
Another observer described him as the most influential international player witnessed in their lifetime, stating that his legacy remains unmatched even without lifting a World Cup trophy.
Taumalolo’s future in the NRL is also uncertain, with his contract at the North Queensland Cowboys scheduled to end following the 2027 season.
