Tech Mahindra Denies Reports of 30,000 Employee Layoffs
Tech Mahindra, a global technology company and part of the Mahindra & Mahindra group, has publicly refuted recent social media speculation regarding plans for significant workforce reductions. The company addressed the rumors in a filing to the stock exchanges, stating that no such proposal is currently under consideration.
Rumors and Social Media Buzz
The denial comes in response to widespread reports circulating on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) suggesting potential layoffs affecting approximately 30,000 employees. One post questioned whether the potential cuts were linked to the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence or broader geopolitical factors, such as the situation in Iran.
Recent Headcount Trends
Tech Mahindra’s third-quarter results revealed a total headcount of 149,616, representing a decrease of 872 employees. During a post-results discussion, CEO and Managing Director Mohit Joshi attributed this reduction to increased efficiency gains stemming from a greater proportion of fixed-price contracts. Joshi stated that a 2-3% decrease in headcount was not substantial and highlighted the efficiency improvements within fixed-price programs.
Strategic Shift Towards Efficiency
Joshi explained that the company is prioritizing efficiency, particularly within its fixed-price contracts. The company indicated that fresher hiring for fiscal year 2026 is expected to be lower than in fiscal year 2025, reflecting the current demand environment. In FY25, Tech Mahindra onboarded 6,000 freshers.
