Teen Swimmer Dies During Tournament in Burgas, Bulgaria

A 16-year-old boy tragically died during an international swimming tournament held at the Park Arena OZK municipal swimming complex in Burgas, Bulgaria, on February 22, 2026. The incident occurred around 9:00 AM local time during the athlete’s warm-up.

Details of the Incident

The swimmer, a resident of Sofia, reportedly fell ill whereas in the pool. He was immediately removed from the water and resuscitation efforts were initiated. Despite these efforts, medical personnel were unable to save his life.

Tournament Suspended

The international swimming competition, which involved approximately 500 competitors from 30 clubs including teams from Romania and Kosovo, was immediately suspended following the incident.

Investigation Underway

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Burgas has initiated pre-trial proceedings and is currently questioning witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
