Tehuacán Street Food Vendors Face Suspensions Amid Hygiene Checks

Recent verification operations in Tehuacán, Puebla, have led to the temporary suspension of 29 street food vendors due to non-compliance with hygiene standards. The inspections, carried out by the city’s Health Department, focused on ensuring safe food handling practices and preventing the spread of illness.

Compliance and Resumption of Activity

Samuel Rodríguez Serrano, director of Health in Tehuacán, reported that 20 of the initially suspended vendors have since rectified their practices and been allowed to resume operations. The remaining vendors are currently working to meet the required hygiene standards.

Focus on High-Risk Food Businesses

The majority of the suspensions involved taquerías (taco stands) and businesses handling pork products, which are considered to pose a higher health risk due to the potential for contamination if not properly prepared and stored.

Training for Street Vendors

To proactively address hygiene concerns, the Health Department recently conducted training sessions for over 300 street vendors. These sessions covered regulations related to hygiene practices for food sales, emphasizing the importance of preventing diseases and ensuring public safety.

Targeted Inspection Areas

Inspections have been intensified in areas with a high concentration of informal commerce, including the 16 de Marzo market, the La Purísima area, the Xochipilli area, and near various schools. These locations are known for a consistent presence of unregulated food vendors.

Enforcement and Public Health

While the Health Department lacks the authority to impose fines, it can temporarily suspend vendors who fail to adhere to basic hygiene measures. Rodríguez Serrano affirmed that these temporary suspensions will continue to be enforced to protect public health. Poor food preparation and handling practices are recognized as a significant risk to the population.
