A crowd filled the Duomo of Montichiari on November 7, 2026, to attend the funeral of Mirjana Jovovic, a 53-year-old kindergarten teacher who died suddenly the previous week, Brescia Newspaper reported.
Outside the church, mourners held a banner bearing the phrase “Always in our hearts” under a light rain, according to Bresciaoggi. Jovovic taught for fifteen years at the San Giovanni Battista nursery school in the Vighizzolo fraction, according to reporting by BresciaToday.
Friends, colleagues, and family members gathered inside the packed church to bid farewell, joined by her husband Luca and her son Michael, alongside relatives including her mother Miljana, her father Dragan, her sister Biljana, her brother-in-law Ivan, her nephew Filip, and her parents-in-law Tiziana and Francesco, as detailed by BresciaToday and The Day.
Jovovic worked normally on Friday, October 30, but developed a fever and a severe headache by that evening, Brescia Newspaper reported. Her condition worsened quickly, and she died the following morning, Saturday, October 31.
Initial concern over a potential meningococcal infection prompted local health authorities to launch a prophylaxis protocol for 180 close contacts, including children and family members, Horizon School News stated.
However, subsequent laboratory examinations conducted on November 3 ruled out meningococcus, confirming a non-contagious bacterial form, according to Brescia Newspaper. Following these results, the Health Protection Agency (ATS) of Brescia ended the preventive prophylaxis and health surveillance.
During the service, Abbot Cesare Cancarini reflected on the daily transition at the school gates where parents entrust their children to teachers, noting that Jovovic offered a reassuring face and a patient hand, Bresciaoggi reported. Colleagues remembered her strong character, calm demeanor, and dedication to helping children build trust, Brescia Newspaper noted. Abbot Cancarini remarked during the homily, Today we have a pain that we don’t know where to put
and added, Her death leaves us lost, we would still like to hold her hand
, as reported by Brescia Newspaper and Bresciaoggi.
The teacher’s son, Michael, shared a deep personal tribute read during the observances. He invested twenty years of his life in me
, he wrote, describing how she listened to him and helped him strive to become better, as detailed by Brescia Newspaper. Small drawings created by her young pupils were placed near the coffin inside the church, Bresciaoggi reported.
In the wake of the sudden loss, parents from the San Giovanni di Vighizzolo nursery school established a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to support the teacher’s son, BresciaToday reported. Organizers noted that the donations aim to show Michael the deep affection and love his mother gave to the children over the years, according to The Day.
Within days of its launch, the community contribution surpassed 11,500 euros, The Day confirmed. Thank you for the affection and closeness you are showing to all of us.
